Elland and Riorges celebrate 40 years of twinning - again!

The Elland-Riorges Association recently welcomed 35 friends from Elland's twin town of Riorges in central France for an exchange visit which also marked the 40th anniversary of the twin link here in the Calderdale.
The link was first formed in 1978 when the Mayor of Riorges, Bernard Jayol, visited Cllr, now Lord David Shutt at his home in Greetland to discuss the idea of a twin link between the two towns. The idea was quickly taken up and the Elland-Riorges Association was formed under it's first chairman, Thomas Wood.
The Charter of Twinship was signed in Riorges in October 1978 and again in Elland the following year, 1979.  Since then exchange visits have taken place every year and the Twinning celebrated it's 40th anniversary in Riorges last year when 35 members of the Elland Association were warmly welcomed as always by the people of Riorges, during a one-week visit.
This year it was Elland's turn to welcome the Riorges guests who arrived on Saturday 6th July to stay with their host families. A Meet & Greet luncheon was held at Blackley Church on Sunday 7th July and that evening several of the French guests enjoyed the Cube Choir summer concert at Square Chapel.
Early on Monday morning 8th July the whole group set off by coach for a 3-day visit to Shropshire. After visiting the beautiful city of Chester the group travelled to their hotel in Telford which was their base for further visits over the next two days which included Ironbridge Gorge, Blists Hill open air museum, the RAF Museum at Cosford and the Wedgwood factory & museum. Returning to Elland on Wednesday evening 10th July the group dined together at the Toby Carvery, Ainley Top.
On Friday morning 12th July a French Breakfast for all guests and the general public was held at Southgate Methodist Church Hall. Elland. That evening an official Farewell Meal was held at the MBI Shay Stadium Banqueting Suite, attended by the Lady Mayor of Calderdale, Cllr Dot Foster and her Consort.
In her speech of welcome to the French guests she hoped they had enjoyed their visit to the beutiful Calder Valley and expressed delight that the Elland-Riorges Twinning had lasted for more than 40 years and hoped that it would remain strong for many years to come.
During the meal further speeches were made by the Mayor of Riorges M. Jean-Luc Chervin,  Lord David Shutt, M. Bernard Jayol, Elisabeth Dessaux, President of the Riorges Twinning Committee and Paul Cleary, Chairman of the Elland-Riorges Association.
Each in turn spoke of the strong bonds of friendship and respect which have been formed between the people of the two towns over 40 years and paid tribute to the work of past and present Elland and Riorges members who have ensured that the twinning remains strong. Hopefully it will continue for many years to come despite the many loud voices now calling for division and isolation in the world.
Representatives from Donzdorf in Germany, also twinned with Riorges, who had travelled to Halifax specially for the occasion, added their  congratulations to Elland and Riorges on their lasting bond.
Between speeches music was provided by the Brooksbank School band who played and sang appropriate musical selections under the baton of their Musical Director Jamie.

Finally the Mayors of Calderdale and Riorges and the Chairman and President of the Elland and Riorges Twinning Associations signed documents re-affirming their committment to the aims and objects of Twinning and linked arms in a gesture of friendship.
Gifts were exchanged, Paul Cleary presenting Elisabeth Dessaux with a framed photograph of the entire group which had been taken the previous Sunday specially for the occasion.
The Riorges group left Elland to return to Riorges on Saturday 13th July and members of the Elland-Riorges Association now look forward to continuing their friendships when they visit Riorges again next year.
